British started Railways in India for their own commercial and military interests. When British left, present day India had around 54,000 km of track and Pakistan about 25,000 km. Most of the lines, locomotives were damaged as there hadn’t been any significant investments after British realized they will ultimately have to grant independence to India.

India's rising imports is a disturbing trend. Dependency on oil can be understood, since today it can't be produced and can only be extracted.
